NICOLA OKERO

Nicola is a lawyer currently engaged with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) where she works with 20+ stakeholders from the public, private and development space, supporting the development of a national strategy and a pilot One Stop Shop (OSS) platform for the Special Economic Zones programme in Kenya, that will, among other things, foster digitisation and increase Kenya’s trading capacity. Prior to this, she worked in India where she led a team of 14 to launch India’s first Entrepreneurship World Cup in 2019.

The Entrepreneurship World Cup (EWC) is a start-up accelerator and entrepreneurship competition that provides tools and resources to entrepreneurs from 100 countries to help them scale up their solutions to their communities. As the Senior Project Lead, Nicola worked on the project from strategy development and partnership mapping to project completion and further led the India partnership management, working closely with 7 regional partners from across India. She went on to support the global finals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia where she also MC’d the semi-final event on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Internet of Things (IoT).

Nicola graduated from Middlesex University Mauritius where she was elected to the Middlesex Law Society as well as the Student Council. As the International Student and Women’s Representative, she directed a student initiative to create the university’s first International Women’s Day Forum. Following graduation, Nicola was accepted into the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) East Africa where she led a team of 6 in engineering a cohort-track winning solution to open up the political sphere for new political candidates to run for office by developing a cost-effective strategy to redress the reality that elections belonged to a pool of wealthy legacy politicians. Nicola has great interest in the digital economy and specifically how that may influence poverty alleviation on the continent and is in the early stages of setting up a tech business in the recycling and sustainability field.
